I believe that we all possess the potential and resources needed to meet our challenges and live a fulfilling life. We each respond to life in unique, meaningful ways and can access our potential to improve our lives through greater awareness of our own inner experience and through creative and courageous responses in our relationships. I look forward to accompanying you on this important journey. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor and Registered Play Therapist. I hold a Ph.D. in counseling from the University of North Texas and serve as an Adjunct Professor at UNT and TWU, teaching graduate courses in counseling and providing clinical supervision to doctoral level counselor interns. I possess a broad range of training and experience to help people of all ages meet life's challenges and find new directions. Because each adult or child is unique, I facilitate different experiences based upon the specific needs of each person. I provide talk therapy and expressive arts therapies with adults, couples, and teens ages 15 to 105, activity therapy with preteens and teens ages 10 to 15, and play therapy with children from 3 to 9 years old. I also really enjoy collaborating with parents and caregivers to enhance relationships with their children and support the therapy process through regular consultations and a unique filial therapy called Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT).
As a lifelong Texan, I have lived and worked in North Texas for many years. My journey toward the counseling profession began with my own counseling experience. I left the experience with a new self-acceptance and life direction, and a profound respect for the counseling process. I received a Master of Divinity degree from Brite Divinity School at TCU. As an ordained minister, I found opportunities to serve those often rejected or forgotten by the world, coordinating volunteers to care for people living with HIV, and educating the community about the presence of hunger and poverty at home and abroad. As a youth minister for a local faith community, I found myself providing regular crisis counseling to teens, adults and families. It was then that I discovered my passion and purpose as a counselor. If you wish, I can join you in exploring your spiritual beliefs and experiences and their role in your life. I work from a place of respect for all faiths and world-views.
Families have many shapes and sizes. I live with my wonderful wife, stepdaughter, three step-grandchildren, and two Cocker Spaniels, Oscar and Lucy. I know first-hand the daily challenges and joys of living together as a blended family. After experiencing divorce and working to build a loving relationship the second time around, I have a passion for working with couples to develop healthy relationships and work together as parents, no matter what shape their family takes.
Throughout my life so far, I have journeyed through times of great joy and struggle, and many places in between. Along the way, I have been accompanied by certain people who have offered me their presence, understanding, acceptance, and honesty -- and through those encounters I have found my own sense of direction and purpose in life. I welcome the chance to accompany you and your family through the next part of your journey, whatever may lay ahead.
